Stability

Sweep the feelings under the rug

Pack them in boxes stacked in the closet

Emotions are dangerous in a careless world

Where a slip of the tongue can raze the walls

We've all carefully built with blood and tears

Brick and mortar of love and tragedy

Reinforced with rebar of burning regret

Protect us from the gale force winds

Of doubt and oppression that suffocates us

Gingerly whisper in our ears the lies we believe

That success is unattainable no matter what

And that life can only get worse

So we condemn ourselves to simple lives

Not finding the point of dreaming at night

Living day by day and dying the same way

Counting our breaths by the second hand on the clock

Waiting and wondering when our time will run out

We fill our hours with useless gestures

Actions repeated in a monotonous routine

Done with half dead minds and abusive thoughts

Hating ourselves for who we've become

Unable to change for fear of rejection

Held back by our assumed thoughts

Our perceived vision of the world at large

We're all just victims of our own minds

Beaten and scarred by negatively firing synapses

Keeping ourselves from risking it all

Praised and rewarded for accomplishing nothing

Told this is the way the world works

Told this is how life is supposed to be

And swallowing it all with a grimaced smile

Believing everything people say to us

Turning a deaf ear to our own ideas

Convinced we don't know what's best for us

Turning to strangers for needed guidance

Their words are laws that govern our decisions

Loopholes lead us to believe we are free

Allows us to think we have a semblance of control

But the grip we have is flimsy and weak

Easy to lose and impossible to regain

Fingertips slip and desperately reach for anything

Looking for stability and a hand to hold

Finding nothing but the empty air
