We
We walked
Like photographs in the wind
The gusts dictated our direction
On dark city streets broken glass glinted in the street lights
Crunched underfoot like newly fallen snow
Silhouettes of people moved behind closed curtains
We braved the outdoors with nowhere else to go
We talked
Like words written in ink
Our phrases were permanent
The gale took our voices and threw them behind us
Causing miscommunication and misinterpretation
Visions in our heads were miles apart
Feeding our mutual feelings of alienation
We loved
Like images on a movie screen
Always destined to come to an end
We buried hands in pockets and shivered in the cold
Never seeking shelter in the warmth of each other
Both physically and mentally we kept our distance
Too nervous, too scared, to be close to another
We parted
Like pain over time
Slowly fading until forgotten
What held us together was tenuous at best
Unable, or unwilling, to hold us together
We admitted what we knew from the beginning
That neither of us could bear rough weather
